The first major issue that Paul address in the Corinthian church is that of unity and divisions. The Corinthian church has split into various factions. Paul pleads with the church that they put aside the selfishness that has caused these divisions and that they focus upon the cross of Christ. By fixing their eyes on Christ they will learn humility in putting others ahead of themselves and thus preserve the unity of the church. The intended result is that they would act as one in the way the church body speaks, thinks and acts.
