Although the letter of 1 Corinthians is full of hard criticisms of the theology
and practice of the Corinthians, Paul begins with a simple reminder of the
gospel and of their blessings in Christ. He especially focuses in on the fact
that God is faithful. He has been faithful in giving them an abundance of gifts
in the past. In the present they do not lack for any thing they need
spiritually. And this faithfulness in the past and the present confirms to them
the faithfulness of God into the future as they wait for the return of Christ.
Thus, the application that Paul wants to begin with is simply a call to faith in
a faithful God.
