The main body of Ephesians opens with a list of the blessings that believers have received from God. In verse 3 Paul takes the standard Old Testament words of blessing to God and gives them a decidedly New Testament spin. He says that the blessings come to us through the obedience of Christ, not through our own obedience. He also points out that these are spiritual blessings, not the physical blessings of the Old Covenant. The blessings we have are anchored in heavenly realities. We often focus on the physical blessings we have from God, but Paul instructs us that our focus and our greatest joy ought to center on spiritual blessings.
